Did you read that headline and think, “Bo-ring! Are they trying to put me to sleep?” Well, we are a mattress company.
But in all seriousness, these certifications matter — especially if you don’t want your mattress to cause health problems for you and those around you. So, what do these “stamps of approval” mean?
GREENGUARD Gold Certification
The GREENGUARD certification program gives consumers like you the ease of mind that products designed for indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, creating healthier living spaces and interiors for all. It also helps you know whether or not a manufacturer’s sustainability claims are legit thanks to third-party evaluations.
Well, the Gold certification for low emissions is even more rigorous because it considers the health and safety of children and the elderly, and it determines if a product is safe for use in schools and healthcare facilities.
Our GREENGUARD Gold-certified product? All five of our mattresses have been scientifically proven to meet the third-party emissions standards for chemicals and pollutants — like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates — so you aren’t potentially exposed to health-hazardous materials while you sleep.
What About the CertiPUR-US Certification?
All of our mattresses — the Elite Hybrid, Star Hybrid (formerly Bear Hybrid), Pro Hybrid, Bear Original and now the Bear Cub Kids Mattress — use foams that meet the CertiPur-US standards for the content, emissions and durability of polyurethane foam products.
A CertiPUR-US-certified foam is tested by independent, accredited labs to ensure it is:
- Made without ozone depleters.
- Made without flame retardants banned by the EPA or determined to potentially cause cancer, genetic defects or risks to fertility and unborn children.
- Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals.
- Made without formaldehyde.
- Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- Has low VOC emissions for indoor air quality.
All certified foams are analyzed and tested twice within the first year, and then retested and recertified annually to ensure manufacturers like us aren’t getting lazy with their production standards.
In short: Bear mattresses are non-toxic. You can rest assured that our mattresses will not cause any health problems associated with high levels of VOCs, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates, flame retardants — all those chemicals and pollutants that we know are bad for us.
Why Should You Care?
You wouldn’t want to sleep on a mattress that’s actively bad for your health and the environment, right? Well, that’s why we adhere to the strict standards set by these two certifications: We care about you and your health, as well as the quality of the spaces we inhabit.
If you’re shopping for a mattress, you should look for these certifications because whatever mattress you end up with, it should improve your health and quality of life — not make it worse.
